If they keep trying at it after they leave then it can work. But they live in a world where thats all they have and see daily, so its not an easy task.

I dont think that it is the rehab facility that is innefective. I think it is the person. I did not go to rehab to sober up. I started in AA. Its all about how much you want to stay sober. If you want to stay sober , you will do the things necessary to be successful, if not you will drink again. Simple as that.

It can be effective. But the person has to want to change.

rehab,i find it not effective.celebs whos in and out in rehab are not really serious to get better. They go for show then out then repeat again.

The reason celebs are in and out of rehab is because there is no real consequences for them. A slap on the wrist and community service, then its on the the next arrest

  7. Polichinela says:

It is effective if the person has the will to stick to not drinking or using drugs again and if the person falls once or twice has the will to commit him or herself to the program again.
I think celebrities can fall into their bad habits faster than us mere mortals because of the lifestyles they lead, they are in temptation even more than us, but I do admire the fact that they are trying to quit whatever it is that they are destroying themselves with, and the fact that they have to do it in front of the cameras makes it even harder, I don’t think that being under constant scrutiny can be that helpful.

They just run out of cash, so pop into Betty Ford to get some more drugs..it is all a front and the rehab facilities are really crack houses – probly

It is effective, look what it did for Pete Doherty.

Most do it to try and keep a good name, but we all know it does not work.
Am sure you all heard Nicole Richie was arressted this weekend and suffers from eating disorders, all drug and alcohol related.
I mean she is in rehab at age 25? thats pretty serious.
I just learnt also that she had done heroin, what a waste of life.

Rehab only works if you want to be there… i have been to 3 of them… i was forced into the first two by my parents… the last one i went to voluntarily… i had truly hit my rock bottom… i was ready to make that change and enough was enough… so, in my opinion yes, rehab is effective… however, only when you are ready… and it’s a continued process even when you leave that rehab… if you want to stay clean you have to work at it…

  12. Cliff Schaffer says:

Nearly all methods of drug treatment have about the same “effective” rate if by “effective” you mean “abstinence”. About five percent of all people in rehab will basically mature out of their addiction and stop using every year.

If any treatment program claims a higher rate, you should be immediately suspicious. Alcoholics Anonymous, for example, claims higher rates but AA will not allow anyone to do any real objective research on their results.

The only drug treatment that has been shown to work for more than a few percent per year is drug substitution. For example, the substitution of methadone for heroin. The reason is that it is difficult to cure the underlying emotional and other issues that drive the drug abuse in the first place. Therefore, until the person can mature out of their addiction, the method chosen is simply to substitute another drug that is less harmful and allows the person to maintain a somewhat normal life even while they continue to use drugs.

Most of the people who answer these questions really know nothing at all about the subject. There is a huge amount of ignorance on these topics. For more information I suggest you take a look at the references available at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer

If you only read one book on the subject, the one to read is the Consumers Union Report on Licit and Illicit Drugs at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/cu/cumenu.htm
