Can anyone suggest an effective treatment for insomnia?

Alcohol doesnt help me sleep either unless I drink myself into a coma lol
I am currently going through a stressful time and find I cannot sleep no matter how tired I am, or if I do go to sleep easily I wake after a couple of hours and then just lie there until it is time to get up. My doctor prescribed valium and stilnoct but apart from the fact that I only sleep about 4 hours afterwards they just give me headaches and make me feel zoned out during the day which makes it very hard to function – I have 3 kids so am very busy. I also tried the herbal remedy valerian for a couple of weeks, this didnt work at all. Any suggestions other than medication?

I exercise regularly, eat well and avoid caffeine after around 4 pm
Sadly Jak my marriage of almost 16 years is breaking up so yes I do know what is causing the sleeplessness I just dont know how to stop it.

i sorta have the same problem, i sleep for like 3-4hrs and wake up then lay there for like 30min and fall asleep then wake up again (about 3 times each night).

idk if this works but i’ve been getting up, chugging super cold ice-tea from the frig and going back to bed. i think it works; idk i cant remember a lot of times

it seems like you recognize the cause is your recent increase in stress. So I don’t think pills are great unless you are stressed for absolultely no reason. So why are you stressed? Is it because of the kids? Money? Why don’t you try writing down how you feel, what your thoughts are. Write it as a letter to the people causing you stress or even your pet dog (if you have one, if not, maybe get a dog). I find that when i can’t sleep at night, it’s usually because i’m busy worrying about something and that once i get my worries all written out and mulled over, i can finally rest easy (for the most part).

don’t listen to Jon first of all!
just going to sleep one or two hours earlier per night can start relieving some sleep debt, thus, allowing one to be more alert and productive. Other things that help you sleep better are avoiding alcohol and caffeine a few hours before bed (they cause lighter, easily disturbed sleep), exercising (early in the day or afternoon, NOT right before bed), practicing relaxation techniques (such as yoga or simple breathing exercises), and avoiding bright lights before bed (including TV, the computer, video games, etc.).

When I couldn’t sleep due to stress, I took Melatonin which is what are body’s produce, but because you are stressed your brain isn’t producing enough to make you sleep. You can get Melatonin at any vitamin shop, Target, Walgreens, etc.

And using a Lavender Oil/Spray has helped me sleep as well. Good Luck!

    Insomnia

“In folklore, pillows were filled with lavender flowers to help the restless fall sleep. There is now scientific evidence to suggest that aromatherapy with lavender may slow the activity of the nervous system, improves sleep quality, promote relaxation, and lift mood in people suffering from sleep disorders. Studies also suggest that massage with essential oils, particularly lavender, may result in improved sleep quality, more stable mood, increased mental capacity, and reduced anxiety. In one recent study, participants who received massage with lavender felt less anxious and more positive than participants who received massage alone. Lavender flowers have also been approved in Germany as a tea for insomnia, restlessness, and nervous stomach irritations.”

I used to have the same problem. For me, controlling the stress was key. I found that exercise helped me to work off stress – walking several miles and lifting weights were great. Yoga also helped. I got a few introductory DVDs and found that the exercises helped me to relax.
