I've been clean and sober for almost 19yr.
Even though I wasn't in my opinion and addict or alcoholic.

It all starts with you, and you wanting to stop and seek some help.

Most doctors aren't too familiar with a 12 step program, and try to treat the disease of addiction with other drugs.
It doesn't seem to have the desirable results, in other words cure.

There is only one way to control your addiction.
Total and complete Abstinence.

You are dealing with not only a big addiction, but one that has consumed most of your life. Realize that it did not take just a few years to begin, so accept the fact that it will be a few years before you can get it resolved. Valium and other tranqs do work, and the "stupid" effect does seem to ebb as time goes on. Anabuse is also a treatment, as I am sure you have researched. Cold Turkey ---- really tuff to contemplate since the early days and weeks without alcohol are really tough to endure -- your body and brain are so used to the stuff, that actually, it could kill you--- more than one person with an addiction as you have described yours has died trying cold turkey. Certainly if you have the will power, make a chart for a month's period, to wean yourself. Allow each day for less and less in your chart..... In your place I'd get with not only a phys. who deals with alcohol addictions, but with AA as well, for support. Let them know that you are not going cold turkey, or join them as soon as you are off the stuff. They are a tremendous group of people each one. You can only reclaim your life if you are determined to end your addiction. And you pain management must come from other sources than alcohol.
