I take Nortriptyline every day as an effective treatment of my IBS and the packaging states not to consume alcohol with the drug.
I don’t drink, personally, but want to know -why- it’s not allowed.
Will it just enhance the effects of the alcohol? Are there contra-indications? Will it lead to faster liver (other organ) failure?
According to the link provided below, alcohol is NOT counter-indicated with this medication.

idk but most prescription drugs advise you not to consume alcohol with pills so it might just be a formality though alcohol does enhance the effects of a lot of drugs so be wary
This is the case with most medications. If you want to play it safe and smart, then don’t drink. More than 100 medications interact with alcohol, leading to increased risk of illness, injury and, in some cases, death. The effects of alcohol are increased by medicines that slow down the central nervous system, such as sleeping pills, antihistamines, antidepressants, antianxiety drugs, and some painkillers. In addition, medicines for certain disorders, including diabetes and heart disease, can be dangerous if used with alcohol. Check this Alcohol Reaction Drug List before mixing your medication with alcohol. It tells you the risks of mixing the two. http://alcoholism.about.com/cs/effect/a/bldruglist.htm
nortriptyline is used for a lot of things including pain management. it is a central nervous system depressant – as is alcohol. so if you take the two of them you are going to get enhanced effect and you may experience more side effects of the drug.
