Shouldn’t the U.S. regulate cocaine instead of letting the black market dictate quality?

People will consume the drug anyway……illegal or not. The question is: Would it be better policy to REGULATE the sale of this substance (and others) OR continue to criminalize and risk tainted products reaching the streets in large quantities.

This same scenario arises when marijuana is laced with something much stronger (cocaine etc.).

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Nearly a third of all cocaine seized in the United States is laced with a dangerous veterinary medicine — a livestock de-worming drug that might enhance cocaine’s effects but has been blamed in at least three deaths and scores of serious illnesses.

The medication called levamisole has killed at least three people in the U.S. and Canada and sickened more than 100 others. It can be used in humans to treat colorectal cancer, but it severely weakens the body’s immune system, leaving patients vulnerable to fatal infections.

Scientific studies suggest levamisole might give cocaine a more intense high, possibly by increasing levels of dopamine, the brain’s “feel-good” neurotransmitters.
9121……………I only say “people will do it anyway” because they have been doing drugs and getting high for thousands of years. But maybe you’re right, perhaps we’ll buck the trend in the next 10 years………lol

If I were a crackhead, I think I’d still have enough sense to sooner trust something from a liquor store over something that was made in some guy’s bathtub.

I hope we follow Mexico’s actions. We’ll have no choice soon as real estate markets rise in border towns from all the addicts seeing paradise in their backyards.
America needs to man up and let people kill themselves if that’s what needs to be done.
The war on drugs sucks and no one is changing their minds about whose side they are on. That’s the detriment to ALL americans and not just the idiots who choose to ruin their brains on that stuff.

  3. Boss H says:

No that would be socialism and we can’t have government controlling markets now can we…. well unless the right-wingers judge the market as an immoral one that has to be squashed.

BTW wonder how much of that stuff is making it into prescription drugs as a result of using cocaine from columbia to make them.
For that matter I wonder how many people know pharmacy companies are buying cocaine from the same people, that are shipping it here illegally, to make script drugs.
all this could have been avoided by simply minding our own business and not worrying about how everyone else lives their lives.

Wonder how big the tax cuts would be if the war on drugs was ended…..the biggest example of big government to ever exist.

  4. TheClown says:

Cocaine is regulated under the substance abuse act that Nixon passed.
    It’s a class I drug.

Schedule I: narcotic drugs such as opium, morphine and cocaine.

Like every other narcotic it is abused.

  5. Man says:

    Isn’t that why there’s crack?

  6. Aging Hippie Liberal D**sche says:

I thought we were still on weed, mannn…..

  7. Tom says:

No, because if you’re stupid enough to do those types of drugs, then you’re going to have to face the consequences.

  8. guru says:

Government control of the drug trade. Wait, the government can’t manage anything and now you want them to regulate deadly drugs.

  9. Orion (Indy-Conservative) says:

I think so. I have never even seen real cocaine. I want to try it.

  10. Sgt Red says:

Maybe you should list this in the “I am a brain dead drug head “category.

  11. 9121 says:

    *facepalm*

You are the epitome of a liberal. “People are going to do it anyway…” letting people take irresponsible actions and then INSISTING that the government try to regulate it!?

  12. vinsanity says:

totally, like why do we need cops or laws or anything..oh wait then we would have something called chaos..

  13. Chief David M says:

    Prohibition = organized crime

It did in the 1920s. It does in 2009. The more people ignore history the more rapidly it repeats itself.

  14. If I say monkey- they ban me! says:

    Black market? Stop being racist!

  15. Butters says:

yeah, like thats gonna happen! What the government doesn’t seem to understand is that I can get an 8 ball of coke, an ounce of weed or a hit of heroin just by making a phone call. And I’m just an average, geeky white boy. I make a choice not to poison myself with that crap. The US government allows a humongeous market of organized crime go on right beneath or noses in order to maintain thier seemingly “nanny state”, the so-called drug war is the biggest scam and infringement on human rights the United States has ever known!

  16. Robert T says:

Does that mean Tax? Tax them not me.
