Does a person with alcoholism in their genes have a chance of drinking normally?

If a man has a high percentage of blood relatives with alcoholism, does this mean he is more likely to misuse alcohol due to genetic faults or through learned behaviour, or is it a self fulfilling prophecy?

While he may have a stronger tendency to drink too much than most people, his genes are not in control of his drinking habits. With a bit of will power, he can avoid alcoholism. He may have to go to the extent of not drinking at all, but it can be done.

well I have several uncle and grandparents who were alcoholics it does not make me an alcoholic, I drink very conservatively .. and I am aware of the problem that can be .. it is your choice on how you want to drink .. if you think you may abuse do not use … it is that simple…

not at all, alcoholism is a state of mind. if you dont drink how can you become an alcoholic for example?
    it can happen to anyone
    and anyone can prevent it
just be aware that you dont slip into this state, and the fact that youve asked this shows your concerened, which means your less likely to already!
    just be careful.

You can look at brothers & one can drink & the other is addicted. It is always best for everyone not to drink. I have even heard of people becoming alcoholics after 40 when they were fine before that.

You can totally have control over it. I know they say alcoholism is a disease, but it is your choice weather to drink or not. I used to drink a lot. Once you become an alcoholic it’s hard to stop. The key is just fighting to get it out of your system and then you won’t want it anymore.

We have alcoholism in the family.
I stay away from alcohol completely. I realized a long time ago there are some families who are more sensitive to such things as alcohol and feel there is a huge chance that I could wined up a alcoholic. If we do not know are history how then can we know are future…..
There are whole races of people that are very sensitive to such drugs. It is just the way it is. People joke about it, make holidays out of it but there is a reason for such jokes and holidays.

Some people make alcohol in there system by eating certain foods. We had a old rancher we know who ate pasta at a restaurant in the bigger town and he stopped at are place for he was throwing up drunk!! He is in his 70′s and he does not drink alcohol and did not want to drive any further to his ranch feeling like he was.

People do what feels good to them. If being drunk feels good to someone they will drink. I would rather not have my children drink, they are going to it is society. Alcohol is one of the last legal drugs….but my children are not going to have childhood memories of a drunk mother.

I have a big problem with such a harmful drug being legal when there are other drugs that are safer but illegal, dose not make sense to a mind that tries to make logic of situations. Though just try to take away peoples drugs and we have already seen what will happen!

I feel genetic pre disposition has a lot to do with it. I feel those who do not realize, or care about this (such as kids) do not realize that alcohol is addictive, a family and life killer. They may do what there parents do.
Possibly a self fulfilling prophecy to those without self control or the education, or the common sense to realize just because every body does something, and the government says it is ok, that it is actually ok.
