Red wine is a particularly rich source of antioxidants flavonoid phenolics, so many studies to uncover a cause for red wine’s effects have focused on its phenolic constituents, particularly resveratrol and the flavonoids. Resveratrol, found in grape skins and seeds, increases HDL cholesterol and prevent blood clotting. Flavonoids, on the other hand, exhibit antioxidant properties helping prevent blood clots and plaques formation in arteries
OK so non-alcoholic wine is actually grape juice. Thomas Bramwell Welch was a believer in the prohibition movement and wanted a substitute for communion wine… Anyway you didn’t ask that. Grape juice has the same amount of antioxidants, but not the blood thinning effects. It does have more vitamins… but contrary to popular belief wine is high in vitamins and iron. Beer is actually the best for you it has the antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and it adds fiber.
This isn’t an easy question to answer. I’ve heard that wine has health benefits, fitting a J-Curve (ie, non-drinkers are less healthy than moderate drinkers, but far more healthy than heavy drinkers, plot it — looks like a J).
But, they also found similar things with beer, and I believe spirits as well.
So, it appears that the alcohol is actually good for you in moderation, but the wine has a little something extra in it.
My personal opinion is that our bodies know how to metabolyze alcohol because we’re supposed to drink it, and these J-Curves say that its 1-2 drinks/day.
The wine.
