Is there a law that you cannot sell drugs within 1000 ft of a church (aswell as anywhere else)…?

I was reading a news report and A lady was found with drugs. The story said she was being charged with lots of things including selling drugs within 1000 of a church. Is that a law, i have never heard of it. Here is the paragraph from the story

“The eight face various charges including possession and intent to sell cocaine within 1,000 feet of a church, probation violations and marijuana possession.”

You cannot sell drugs anywhere, but the penalties are stricter if you are caught by a school, I did not know about by a church.

It can be a higher offense near schools and perhaps other places young kids congregate. But in general, it’s illegal everywhere.

A lot of states have a special section in the charge for offenders who do that within 1000′ from a school/church/govt bulding. It is the same charge of possesion with intent, but the penalty is higher.

If you were to read all the mumbo jumbo in here, they will up the penalty one degree if you are within so many feet of a church, school etc.

    yes, you read that right…

Most states have that law on books to include selling drugs near churches, schools, or other insitutes that SHOULD be considered a “safe haven”. It is generally the SAME charge as “selling drugs” it jsut carries a little stiffer penalty.

The law states that you can’t sell drugs at all, but the fine is more if you are with in 1000 feet of a church or school b/c of the fact that you are intending to sell to children. Which is and should be a worse punishment than selling to adults. But any intent to sell drugs in illegal.

here in florida the 1000 ft of a church law exists.

Not sure if it does in every state or not

Those laws started poping up 10 or so years ago. They vary by state and city. Generally they will have a harsher penalty for selling drugs within a certain distance of churches and schools.

  11. Hawkeye says:

Many states have laws that increase the punishment for selling drugs in close proximity to schools, churches, etc. because of the greater likelihood they are selling drugs to kids.

It’s illegal to sell cocaine everywhere in the U.S. These people just face more punishment than if they were not so close to a community center like a church.

law that says you cant sell drugs period…….
bigger charges if its close to a school or church.
    yes its a law

There are additional charges when someone is caught within so many feet of a SCHOOL, PARK, OR CHURCH. Anywhere where children are expected to be present. If you speed thru a school zone during summer break with a pound of pot in your trunk, you’re going to get double the prison time.
