How long does it take for alcoholism to long term affect you?

if you drank 2 years every day, are you ruined for the rest of your life from the effects? can you just stop suddenly without getting sick from stopping?

Damage to your liver would heal over time, but it would take several years to return to its previous healthy state. But it depends on how much the person has been drinking. If it is more than 3-4 oz. of hard liquor or 5-6 beers per day, there will be some detox when stopping. See a doctor if you are worried, they can prescribe something to help alleviate the detox symptoms.

My son is an alcoholic and his liver function test are fine, I mean drinking every day if he can for about 20 years, and no you just can’t quit you go thru withdrawall just like you would for any drug, nausea, shaking ,a feeling like the flu. Some people’s liver is just tougher than another,I don’t know I haven’t had a drink for about 20 years. Good Luck Rita V

My boyfriend has drank every single day at 400+ units a week for 5 years now and his lives functions are showing up as fine in a blood test that he took last week. Your liver is an amazing organ it, with the right care and help, has the ability to regenerate itself. Alcohol damages the liver thats not something that can be disputed however most alcoholics don’t eat properly which increases the rate of decline. I always ensure that if my boyfriend is sober enough to chew that I feed him 2 large balanced meals a day.

Someone drinking large quantities of alcohol should NEVER stop drinking without getting doctors advice first, a doctor can tell you if the amount you’re drinking is conducive to going ‘cold turkey’. They withdrawals suffered from alcohol are often the most dangerous to go through, even eclipseing the severity of heroin withdrawals. This depends on the amount you’re drinking. Coming off alcohol without medication can cause tremors, sickness, confusion, insomnia, depression, hallucinations, palpatations, convulsions and even death.
