A non-alcoholic can take alcohol or leave it and has no ritualistic relationship with alcohol. Meaning that there is no regular or routine alcohol consumption that forms the basis of a habit. Of course, regular and routine come in all sizes. Getting blind drunk every weekend and not drinking during the week could still make you an alcoholic. Never or rarely getting drunk but drinking every night could also make you an alcoholic. Alcohol dependencies are exactly that : someone who is dependent on alcohol. However the are consuming alcohol, they can't stop.

Dave is an idiot. If you can choose to only drink three drinks a week, or even longer, on your own decision, then you're not an alcoholic. If you have the discipline and choice to drink when you want, and not drink when it's inappropriate, then you're not a true alcoholic. However, if you let it completely control your life, to where even though you have no alcohol in the house, you have no money to buy any, and yet you still have to drink it, then you have a problem.

Three drinks a week, more like 3 drinks an hour for 8 hours and not making it to work, than u may be an alcoholic. But remember rehab is for quitters.
