Measuring “Britishness” by swearing allegiance to the Queen?

It has been suggested in the news today that school-leavers should assert their “Britishness” by swearing allegiance to the Queen.

Surely a better way of doing this would be to punch a schoolteacher, get expelled, become a parent at the age of 14, live in sheltered accommodation for a couple of years before embarking on a new life living in a taxpayer-supplied Council house where you can pedal heavily cut cocaine and heroin to you likeminded neighbours.

What do you think?

I think this is the funniest satire I’ve read in a long time. Well done!

Wow! I’m American, so I don’t know what it’s like to have a monarch, but I know that many of us from kindergarten on up are taught to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag. I guess no matter where you live, schools make it a point to indoctrinate their students.

It’s like governmental tourettes. These ideas keep arriving like farts, but disappear quick enough.

Surely the ultimate test is not so much to swear allegiance as to complain that it is against one’s human rights to be required to do so?

When I joined the Civil Service I had to swear an allegiance to the monarch. Made sure I had my fingers crossed though. Can’t stand this unelected family of Germans in our midst. Long for a Scottish republic. Guess that answers your question about what I think of Britishness.
