I have a friend that drinks mostly at night and almost every night. She also drinks at every social function day or night. She can easily down 25 + beers & says she’s not an alcoholic but rather a social drinker. When she does drink she does get sloppy plastered and I consider this an alcoholic. Which one would you say is more accurate?
Is this an alcoholic or a social drinker?

An alcholic, especially when she denies it.
Alcoholic definitely if she drinks every night. The question is…why does she drink every night? If she ONLY drank at social functions she would be a social drinker. Someone who drinks everynight and gets plastered is an alcoholic in my book.
An alcoholic is defined as someone who has 3 or more drinks a day. There are many different types of alcoholics but if she drinks almost every night, she probably drinks alone too
Denial, drinks nightly, at every social event, drinks until plastered…sounds like an alcoholic to me.
I’m not a professional , but I would say alcoholic. Tell her to try this test….Drink 2 beers no more no less every day for 30 days. This will prove to me she has a handle on it and is not an alcoholic. But It sounds like about a week week and a1/2 she will drink more than 2 beers. In fact she will drink it till it’s gone …ALCOHOLIC
Sounds like a lush to me!
Try challenging her to 30 days of sobriety. No booze, drugs, or pills of any sort. If she can do it, great! We’re all wrong. But if she can’t, then perhaps it’ll show her that she has no control over alcohol.
if shes a friend you need to act quick. shes going to hurt herself or someone else. if you can “without losing a friendship” challenge her to go mon thru fri with no booze; with a promise of dinner on you fri night. if she cares more for the booze you answerd you own question.
Pardon my grammar, but: She’a a drunk!!!! Not an alcoholic, but a REAL drunk! 25+ drinks, she should pray every night that she isn’t DEAD! You pray for her too, since you ain’t got the sense to suggest REHAB.
She drinks like I used to, but now I’m a sober drunk.
This is my rule….
When I controlled it I couldnt enjoy it
when I enjoyed it, it was out of control
She may not be an alcoholic. But she sounds like a binge drinker. If she can stop drinking or stop after one or two drinks then she is not an alcoholic. But only she can prove this. If she refuses to admit to drinking too much or if she is not open to the idea of stopping then she needs serious help. I used to drink a lot because I was in an unhappy relationship. But I was not an alcoholic and now I usually don’t drink more than two drinks in one night and I only drink about once a week. I hope your friend can confront whatever unhappiness is making her drink. Good luck to you both.
