Question by Daniel John: Is there a better way to help people who are addicted to narcotics than the way we’re currently doing it?
If the goal of the War on Drugs has been to lessen the number of American citizens addicted to dangerous substances, it seems we’re losing that war.

No, send them to jail where they can be locked up next to other drug users.
It won’t screw up their life or anything.
And it’s highly doubtful they will turn to drugs once they are out of prison.
The war on drugs has been a huge success! ; P

Yes legalized drugs and then the drug usage will decrease as it did in Portugal.
Any decrease in addiction rates on street drugs have been matched by increases in addiction rates on prescription drugs. What’s the difference between the two?
With the latter, a corporation profits.
Yes, but the cost of such measures is prohibitively expensive. Realistically, each person should have someone helping and guiding them on a weekly if not daily basis, but the cost to employ all those caretakers would be too much.
Drug abuse should be treated as a public health issue. The cost of courts, prisons, and law enforcement to fight the war on drugs is huge.
The United States has a greater percentage of our citizens in jail than anywhere else on earth.
There have also been millions of young people arrested for procession of small amounts of weed who have been marginalized because they had the misfortune to be caught.
We would be much further ahead if we put our money into treatment.
There’s got to be and we have to pray and work for that. I remember we signed the DARE promise once in elementary school but once we were actually confronted with drugs in middle and high school I never heard another word about it. I also heard very little about safe sex. People avoid scary topics like that because they are so scary but they need to be discussed on a regular basis all throughout a child’s schooling so that once they are confronted with drugs they have the current knowledge to make an informed decision. We should also have comprehensive programs, pregnant teens that come talk, ex-addicts or current addicts to come talk, people whose lives fell apart because they made a couple of wrong decisions. Since protecting oneself is so important and parents don’t talk about it much the schools/educators should be stepping up to the plate. Ideally everyone would have parents who are good role models and love their kids and teach things to their kids but that may never happen so until the government can make us apply and meet standards to have children, the same way we apply for everything else in life, it should be written into law that the schools teach this.
Great question:)
