Because it’s legal and people think that if it’s legal that means it’s okay.

If you eliminate the alcoholic’s rights to be such then you cease to be a free society.

What makes you think that people prefer to live in a society that allows open alcoholism? Where I live, there are many laws designed to prevent people abusing alcohol from harming themselves or others. Detox centers have become a huge industry. I don’t think it would be anymore practical to outlaw alcoholism than it would be to outlaw strep throat. Dealing with ugly drunks is one of the costs of a free society.

Because someone drinking alcohol has no effect on OTHER people. Whereas, smoking in public, does have an effect on others. Adult can make decisions for themselves, healthy or not, its their choice.

  5. Mr. Knowitall says:

We tried prohibiting alcohol! There was a movement to make alcohol illegal that went on for 100 years, and finally we did actually pass a constitutional amendment outlawing alcohol. It didn’t work! More people drank during prohibition than before. Many people died from illegal ‘bootleg’ liquor that was unsafe. Plus there was a whole new problem with organized crime.

In retrospect it’s been called ‘The Noble Experiment’.

Both my parents are alcoholics…if it wasn’t legal they would have found a way to drink…

  7. Richard F says:

I don’t know of a society that “allows open alcoholism.”

Prohibition has never worked, on any substance, in any society. Bootlegged product and organized crime result…plus, people continue in their vice. They find a way.

Going the other way doesn’t work either. Remember when Amsterdam allowed total, free drug use, including passing out free needles? They finally had to pull that law back.

Some people will choose to drink and/or smoke as they have since the dawn of man. Others will choose to abstain.

But I don’t believe any society allows open alcoholism, open drinking, yes, but alcoholism, no.

    Good question.

I enjoy living in a free society where I can choose what I want to do.
I do not want the government in bed with me.

    Cheers!

not everybody’s jumping on the ‘health above all rights’ bandwagon. Some folks still enjoy the right to make choices based on individual preferences rather than live their lives according to strangers’ preferences.
