Does it interfere with your daily life? Do you have to drink to get through your day at work? Are you unable to keep a relationship with your spouse because you have secual intercourse with strangers? Questions such as these should be asked of ones self.

A lot of people who have never been addicted think shoving them into some meeting or clinic will help, it wont. A) They have to want to quit. B) If they are hooked on something that is not physically addictive, try helping them to first cut back on their use, find some new friends, hobbies, C) If they are on opiates there are many rehab/detox centers, methadone, suboxin, otherwise talk them into AA or NA meetings, just one, to show them there are people to lean on. But what happens is then they use the meeting as a crutch instead of the drugs . . . personally counseling is a waste of time. You have to wantto stop, realize on your own how much your ruining your life, and then quit, either thru detox or cold turkey.

The people who need the counseling most do not actually see the need. It is the other people in their life (friends and family) who see it and must at least attempt to steer them in the right direction…

A person will know that his consumption of alcohol or drugs is getting out of hand when the following signs are evident:

    * when it’s hard for him or nearly impossible to put a stop to his addiction all on his own.
    * when he always feels a craving for the substance just so he can get through the day.
    * when he has gotten more violent than usual and other people are suffering from the change.
    * when he has been fired from his job or have problems in his relationship because of his addiction.
    * when he no longer has the ability to perform normal functions as well as he did before.
