Question by sherri: Can a person with a masters in counseling get a job working in addiction?
Does one need a CDAC license to work in addiction, or can someone with a masters in counseling get a job with an organization and work in addiction? My hope is to obtain an LPC after I complete my masters program but I think about working with addiction in addition to other things. I don’t want to limit myself or my training.

Maybe–but the best therapists are those who are familiar with addictions, both academically and personally. Addicts are too “slick”, as they are masters in denial, rationalization and evasion! They can run circles around the average therapist. Almost none get therapy out of personal need They are almost always mandated by law/court to get treatment. Addictive personalities are driven by a physiological and psychological needs.
I got an MA and later, an Ed Specialist degrees in Guidance and Counseling and worked for 20 yrs as therapist for very troubled adolescents. Difficult, but great years.
