Question by TONY S: Q. for former narcotics addicts: is the pleasure back?
Narcotics such as cocaine, heroin and meth flood the brain with feel good chemicals to the point that without the drug, there is no pleasure in being alive….only the drugs give pleasure. For example, listening to some music you like, is ordinarily pleasurable; if you are an addict, it loses its charm.
How long have you been off narcotics, and is the pleasure back? Is taking a hot shower pleasurable again? Is going to a movie theater and wacthing a movie pleasurable again?
Thank you for answering Krista…I know you’ve heard this before..you need to really focus on having a healtful lifestyle….go running, exercise, do yoga, etc. These are natural ways to get your feel good chemicals going. It is not as big a rush as narcotics, but in time you will enjoy the endorphin buzz.

I’ve been clean since 7-23-07. I used heroin and cocaine (intravenously) for over 5 years, and lots of pills prior to that for about 12 additional years. Kicking the drugs was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done – I lost everything I’ve ever had. Since I stopped in July, I was admitted to the hospital twice for failed suicide attempts. I am still severely depressed, lonely, etc, but I haven’t gone back to the drugs. I’m struggling more now with wanting to commit suicide as I do not enjoy 90% of anything I used to enjoy.
