“Chalk Talk on Alcohol” by Father Joseph C. Martin of Father Martin’s Ashley

Chalk Talk on Alcohol is a three part discussion of the nations’ number one public health problem, alcoholism. Father Martin discusses the things we drink, why we drink them and what happens when someone has the disease of alcoholism. Alcohol is a sedative drug and is addictive. Alcoholism is an addiction to that drug for which there is effective treatment.

John Grinder talks about his brilliant and unconventional approach for working with alcoholism and other addictions.

Alcohol makes me go to my happy place, as cocaine, meth-amphetamine, Ecstasy if world would be nice place to live i wouldn’t be doing these drugs. So nice try Father Joseph but the problem lies deeper in our selfs.

@Towgnr14 I don’t know why people bash AA so much. At the end of the day I (and my family and friends) would be much happier that I was sober, however I chose to go about doing it. I have been sober for three years, and I got sober through AA. My method of remaining sober does not harm myself, my family nor anybody else. I’m a musician so I often perform in bars and I don’t drink. I never had to stop talking to any of my old friends from before I came into AA, and we are all still friends today.

@DemetriouWanker Please consider attending a 12 step meeting. You’ll learn that you aren’t a looser of life but rather someone with an illness that beatable. And, you’ll meet others who can help.

@SJPatrik i came to aa 23 years old,and kept on and off the drink for the next few years theres plenty yonger alkoholics that you can talk to and see for yourself if you like it or not.

  6. tjfreak says:

only 23… thats funny.. thats not really “young” ..I was potentially an alcoholic in 8th grade and guaranteed alcoholic entering high school & I met many people who were in drinking trouble younger ! “want to stop drinking” ? chances are high you may not even be able to…the numbers of people who stop and stay stopped isn’t even comparable to those who try and fail or don’t ever attempt to.

    * If anyone dares to criticize the Twelve Step Program (like I do), they are sure to be viciously maligned (as you have done) or ridiculed (as you have done) and, in some cases, portrayed as nothing short of a cold-blooded murderer (for discouraging people from attending meetings and thus contributing to their “relapse”).

I feel honored to have met Father Martin and to have been a patient at his facility in Havre de Grace, MD. His charismatic way of teaching was amazing and made that part of my recovery process a real pleasure. God Bless you Father Martin!

No mystery, self medicating for what could be numerous underlying reasons/disorders intellectuals talk all kinds of crap until it’s them in the depths of that hell,Intellectualizing for a practicing alcoholic it’s plain lethal.I love all the theories / denial. it’s what happens to YOU & people you touch…PERIOD ! FACT: its the addiction that constantly convinces your self “not me – I’m fine” FACT” “alcoholics are the last to know” & more importantly Liquor is ONLY 1 symptom of the problem.

my alcoholism comes from my OCD

  23. sovietmarxist says:

ik’m on the end of a 4 day bender, i feel really sick… i’m out of vodka. i called the cops then other night, i don’t even remember that, and i called AA and they came and talked to me… i blacked out several times…

  24. jebus0000000 says:

My opinion differs. I think that alcoholism is a response to some negative emotions and is a result of a neurotic personality. I actually think that conditions such as obsessive compulsive disorder , depression and eating disorders are very closely related. It’s a maladaptive mechanism that’s a response to subcontious fear. No body actually wants to be an adict so stop judging people that suffer from this illness!

I’m sorry to hear if anyone is struggling with drug addictions of any type. If you want help, and can’t find help, or if the help you seek isn’t helping you. Try what I have done. Accepted Jesus as Lord in your life. ask him to help you with your addiction, and make a vow to him that you will live for him. If you sincerely desire to stop your addiction then God will deliver you from that stronghold in your life.
Prepare for your life to be changed. Bless you. HE HAS DELIVERED ME : )

  28. jibikao says:

Profound strategies! The shocking of “unconsciousness” is a brilliant way to gain rapport with another person. The unconsciousness mind needs to be acknowledged so the resistance level is lessened, can until then can alternative strategies be discovered to replace the problematic behaviour. I agree. You can’t stop a behaviour. You can replace one with another behaviour that is potentially more beneficial to the well-being of the individual.

  33. xirishmagicx says:

I totally agree. It’s like pure ecstasy flowing one your tongue and slips into your stomach til your head feels.. different. Of course then there’s the beautiful part of dry heaving, extremely painful vomiting til your eyes burst and the next morning sensations of what feels like 1,000 jackhammers in your head til your skull cracks. Sounds absolutely wonderful for a fool with no choice. But I love my choices and especially the good ones.

  34. HitMeQuick says:

I have to admit I do love a drink. Vodka, port, beer, ale, red wine, white wine, gin, whiskey. Anything really. Fortunately I can take it or leave it ( I mainly take it by the way). One of the problems I have with the word alcoholic, is that when you hear the word ‘alcoholic’ it actually sounds like a fresh bottle of wine being poured into a glass. Listen: al-co-ho-lic. Glug glug glug. Mmm alcohol. Anyone fancy a drink?
