my stepson got addicted to the meds he was on, I dont know what it was. he had to go to detox to get off it.

Yes, there are. Mood stabilizers are not narcotics and are the standard treatment for bipolar.
I suspect the young man was also prescribed benzodiapams for anxiety, which is quite common with bipolar, and became addicted to these narcotic medications.
This additction to benzos happens very frequently. I’m glad he got detoxed. Addiction is nasty business.
