Question by Johnny5: Can you become an alcoholic just drinking wine?
Alcoholism runs in my family and I’ve avoided all drinking so I won’t fall into that trap. However, I’ve become curious about wine. Could I become an alcoholic just by drinking wine or is it a relatively safe way to go? Should I just keep avoiding it?

priests do (drink wine and become alcholics from it)
You could have it for special occasions only
Unfortunately Yes…that is where the term wino comes into play.
Sorry but you are doing great not drinking so don’t even bother starting. Take Care
Much Favor!
Wine is an alcoholic beverage so yes you can become an alcoholic by drinking it. Drunks used to be called Wino’s as early drunks in history got drunk on wine.
Just use moderation, but any kind of alcohol is addictive. however of all the alcohols out there wine is the only one so far proven to actually be healthy when drank in moderation. but yes to answer your question, you can become addicted. Just always use moderation. maybe set aside a certain amount of money for a month for spending on it, and then thats it once its gone its gone. if you find yourself craving it it is time to quit.
you sure can it if you think it is becoming problem it more than likely is starting to become one
Alcoholism is NOT about what you drink or how much you drink, rather it is about what alcohol does to you. You should be cautious since it doe run in families. I am a recovering alcoholic and I see the behavior patterns in my child even though she does not yet drink. You may or may not be an alcoholic … only you will ever be able to decide that. Be aware that the possibility exists and live accordingly.
To the previous poster – AAA is the American Automobile Association … AA is Alcoholics Anonymous
Absolutely not! In order to do that, they would have to call them a catchy nickname like, um I dunno… WINOS!
10 Million Europeans would have to say, “Yes.”
Oh yes! I’ve found that a couple of glasses is okay. More can get out of hand. Moderation Baby, it’s not just for narcotics anymore!
YES – My alcoholic Mom drinks like a bottle of it a night practically, it sure seems to work on her!
Anything which contains alcohol puts you at risk of alcoholism, as the definition of alcoholism is addiction to the drug alcohol. Wine contains alcohol.
If you’re happy without it then best not to rock the boat, it’s too risky.
First let me commend you for being smart and consciencoius enough to relaize that people with alcoholism in their family are much more likely to become alcoholics if they ever drink.
To answer your question: Alcohol is alcohol, no matter its form. Yes you most definitely can become an alcoholic from drinking it. Also beware of a few other traps which can get you too. Gambling and drugs. Usually the same gene which makes people liely to become alcoholics also makes them have compulsive tendencies which can make casual gambling into a home wrecking habit as well as casual pot use making the person a loser pot head.
Stay away from alcohol, pot and gambling. Just marry a sexy wonderful woman and she can be your vice.
If it has alcohol in it then . . . it has alcohol in it. If you intend to avoid alcohol, there’s your answer. Also, as a long-time member of AA I can assure you that the program is chock full of people who “only” drank wine or “only” drank beer and got into plenty of trouble.
Some may not agree with me but i believe you become an alcoholic when you are unable to function in life.
If you lose your job, friends, licence, ect… thats when it becomes dangerous.
As long as you are careful to only drink durring certain times when it doesnt effect your life, you should be fine.
I am a recovered alcoholic and I can tell you most definitely YES! Wine counts!
HOW the ETOH (Chemical abrev. for ethyl alcohol) is delivered into the body – it STILL has to be metabolized and processed so it does’nt kill you.
Alcohol is a poison and your body is smart enough to get it metabolized, cleaned up and converted into inert chemical compounds so it doesn’t kill you. It could be hidden in wine juice, cough syrup, chocolate. It doesn’t matter.
A good friend of mine who says he’s an alcoholic swears he can take cough medicine contaminated by alcohol with impunity. I believe him, but not for me. I decline all food, beverages and medications, which are alcoholically contaminated.
Not long ago, I ate cheesecake for three days. And for three days I was sick, having drunk dreams nightly, and a real bastard to live with. It turns out the cake was made with vanilla extract – 8o proof!
I am allergic to alcohol, and it could have set off the craving. Fortunately it did not. But that allergy was rumbling, let me tell you. Luckily, my particular level of sensitivity had not been breached. Someone else may not have been so lucky.
A lot people think alcohol cooks off. That is old data. The new FDA data reveals that it does NOT.
I am certain that if I were to put a drop of Vanilla extract with an eyedropper, one under each eyelid, I would start to crave and I would be “Boiled as an owl”, within minute or hours. Until this actually happened to me and became probably the most powerful allergy reference I have to tell, I only had the book “Alcoholics Anonymous” which told me about the alcoholic that
” We are equally positive that once he takes any alcohol whatever into his system, something happens, both in the bodily and mental sense, which makes it virtually impossible for him to stop.” (“Alcoholics Anonymous” 22:4)
But since you mentioned wine — there was an incident with me, a few years back, which gave me inkling that I had an abnormal reaction to alcohol. (Allergy) Although I did not understand it at the time to be an allergy.
I was at my in-laws, for a holiday dinner, and my father in law offered “a little wine” around the table. I agreed to some, and he filled each glass around the table with about 1 inch of sweet red.
I watched, to make sure I wasn’t the first to sip, and when I first did, it was gone.
I cautiously waited a few minutes, so as not to seem too anxious, and finally asked, “May I have some more wine please”. The reply was, “Oh sorry, that’s all there is.” It doesn’t have to be the same kind”, I said. “Another red or even white will do just fine.”
He said, “No that’s all there was in the house.”
I figured, well, then I guess I won’t drink anymore tonight. Within fifteen minutes or so I was thrown into shock. Into panic. Time stood still for what seemed an eternity and within minutes I was craving a drink so badly, I knew I just had to get out of there. The nearest saloon was only a short walk away.
I began my “finagle” pitch; how much work was still on my desk at the office, how tired I was but still might have to go down to work for an hour. It’s an art form, and it takes time so as not to appear obvious. I think any alkie reading this knows what I’m talking about.
But then my wife surprised me with her “mutual” decision to leave early, and I was stuck, waiting through dessert and then finally departing for home with her; trapped like a rat.
I managed to get home, still white knuckling the crave, but almost two hours had past since that inch of sweet red wine, and its grasp was loosening ever so slightly. I managed to crawl into bed, feeling slightly hung-over, exhausted and traumatized; as if I had drunk an entire bottle of hard stuff, and fell asleep.
But before I did, I realized that something strange was going on with me and it occurred to me that had I been able to chain myself to a radiator, or else use every bit of my willpower as I did, these were the only ways I could possibly have made it.
And all this, with only 1 inch of cheap, sweet, red wine. If I’d had a full “belt” of alcohol, I can’t imagine being able to make it home with my wife that night.
Apparently the small amount of alcohol contained in that tiny glass was enough to push my bodily reaction just over the edge. Would an eyedropperful of vanilla extract under one eyelid do the same?
Probably. If it gets in, I’m reacting; just like my sister does to strawberries or any product thereof made.
I don’t think “normal” people react this way to alcohol. Can you identify with this abnormal reaction to alcohol, this allergic type of response? If you can’t — maybe you’re in not in any present danger. But be careful anyway – since it runs in yoru family. I hope that helps.
Peace,
