Question by Sissy: Is it a alcoholism symptom if someone is drinking socially and seems fine and suddenly appears very drunk?
I believe my husband has an alcohol problem. It has recently started to worry me because he will drink and seem fine and all of a sudden, out of nowhere he gets so drunk he cant function. I am worried that this might not only be a sign of alcoholism, maybe there is something else wrong.

Drinking socially is not the point. The fact is that he drinks to the point of incapacitation. Once in a blue moon is not really a problem, but a regular schedule of it – even if only on the weekends – is a problem. In other words, if his drinking is causing a problem, it is problem drinking.

It might be what he is drinking. When I drink vodka I don’t feel the effect for the first few drinks, and then I get smashed all of a sudden. So I choose not to drink vodka. The symptom of getting drunk all of a sudden isn’t really tell tale to alcoholism, but if he only drinks to be drunk, to the point of ridiculus….is a sign. If you are concerned, contact a local Al-anon chapter. They will talk with you.
Sissy, I can’t say that it’s alcoholism but not knowing your husband it sounds like it I have a gir friend that does thing and she’s been a long time drinker it could be that or he’s taking some other drug and mixing it with the alcohol Good Luck Rita V
According to what you just told me, it’s not an alcoholism symptom if someone is drinking socially and seems fine, and then suddenly appears very drunk. It’s pretty normal.
I don’t know much about your husband – I don’t even know anything about him, but he may not be a regular drinker. Tell him to take it easy on the drinking. I don’t think there is something else wrong, but I could be wrong – I’m not a doctor. If you start noticing that alcohol bottles disappear all in a sudden, then it could be your husband that is drinking behind your back…
If that’s the case, contact someone – so your husband can get help. I once was addicted to alcohol, and these are the ones I contacted in order to get help: http://www.alcohol-addiction-treatment.org/
They actually work, and I referred a friend of mine to them when I noticed that he started to drink a lot more than he was supposed to do. I think you should try it out since I’ve had personal luck with them.
