a post op narcotic that was given to me for severe pain, I have concerns about long term effects?

Question by Bo T: a post op narcotic that was given to me for severe pain, I have concerns about long term effects?
I had an ankle fusion done on the 7th and during recovery the morphene I was given was doing its job until the 2nd night when I developed spasms in the leg I had surgery on, They were so bad I litteraly was in tears and whimpering like a very sick child. I know that they gave me ativan to calm me down but they also gave me a very heavy narcotic that its name started with a D and the nurse told me that this drug was usually given to cancer patients who are in severe pain. I am only curious about this because of the serious effect it had on me and I would like to know more about it so I can find out if there are any long term problems I might have from this narcotic.

You were probably given Dilaudid which is very similar to Morphine. I don’t know why the nurse told you that (about the drug being for cancer patients) unless she was hoping to give you a bit of a placebo effect to get the drug to work better for you. It can also be used for post op pain in severe cases. There are no long term side effects that you should worry about especially if you are/were only using it short term post-op.

It could be Decesset which is similar to Morpheine but a hit of a higher dose. It could be demerol. Who knows.
With taking a narcotic , there is always a chance of dependence upon it if used consistently for a long period of time. However, theyre should be no long term affects on your body excep for addiction if you are using it too much or misuing it..
