Husband has problem & will only go to counseling if it’s free & I find counselor should I be concerned?

Question by Vanessa: Husband has problem & will only go to counseling if it’s free & I find counselor should I be concerned?
My husband and I are in desperate need of counseling as my husband has had a problem with sexual addiction. Hes already told me he doesn’t have a problem and that he will not pay for someone to “tell you what you already know” and will only go to a free counselor that I find. I am very hurt and distraught over all this… What does that signify and what should I do? Thanks!

Find a 12 step group in your area that focuses on sexual addictions. Those don’t cost anything. Pastor’s frequently do counseling for free. Call your local churches and find out who’s willing to do counseling.

Because sexual addiction is such a specific topic, I would think you may have difficulty finding a specialist that offers free treatment. I think more so your concern should be his refusal to avidly seek help himself, when clearly his wife is hurt and concerned. His attitude seems to be saying, “If YOU have a problem with my addiction, then YOU deal with it” and that is very destructive to a marriage. I think it signifies other problems in the relationship besides the sexual addiction itself. If he insists on selfishly making you do all the legwork for his addiction, then perhaps you need to decide if this issue is the only problem in your marriage, and thus even if you are able to find a free counselor, will that solve everything?

Find a therapy group in your area…google it…if he doensn’t have a problem and it’s free then what does he have to lose?
