There is really only one answer here: paperwork! Having been in the field for a while, I can tell you that at the end of the day, paperwork (unfortunately) is the most important part of the business. Without being able to show that you’ve done what the governing bodies are looking for, you won’t be there tomorrow to continue offering services to the people who need them. Managed care organizations and other governing bodies all have specific guidelines and rules they want you to follow. You have to follow them in order to continue to get funding, so you may as well get used to it. As long as you can keep focused on the reasons you’re in the counseling field, you can stay motivated to dance the dance with the MCO’s. Never take things personally or seriously…if you do, you’ll be burnt out within the first 2-3 years.
