Question by sick of it: I’m 5 months pregnant and am going to have a tooth pulled- I have questions?
I am concerned about an infection in a broken tooth ( had a root canal when I was 17 and now it’s filling has come out), that is why i am opting to have it pulled now- with a Dentist’s recommendation. He can’t save the tooth.
Now I am concerned about recovery. I have not had ANY of my teeth pulled before including wisdom teeth. He said that it will be painful after the procedure and that I can’t have any Narcotic pain relievers because of pregnancy- which I am fine with, but how bad is the pain?
Will extra strength Tylenol help at all? or Will I just have to suffer through it?
How long will it hurt?…
What about eating?
I’m pregnant and will only be able to have soft foods like soup and macaroni. My husband says I probably won’t want to eat at all. It’s one of my back upper molar teeth and so it will be hard to chew for a while.
What should I expect?

The extreme pain should only last about 24 hours, with it easing alot by 48 hours. The tylenol probably isn’t going to help very much, but it’s better than nothing at all. I usually ate pretty soon after having a tooth pulled, but then I was able to take vicodin for pain. I really expect all to be pretty well for you after 24 hours. Remember, do NOT use a straw after having the tooth pulled. Good luck!

can the tooth not be caped ? ask your dentist,s but i was not aloud to have a tooth pulled when pregnant?
I had 4 teeth pulled at one time when I was younger. All I can say is milkshakes and ice cream worked wonders. The coldness kind of numbed the pain a bit. (They didn’t give me any narcotics because of the side effects on children)….My mom used to give me motrin for it. Since your pregnant and can’t have motrin, Extra Strength tylenol will probably work just as well. It’ll hurt for about 2 days or so and then just be really tender for a month or so. The severity of the pain depends on how high or low your pain tolerance is. You can also try orajel to help numb it a bit. Just expect to be in pain and now is a good excuse to live off milkshakes and ice cream and jello and pudding…..drink lots of water. Good luck hon!
I had to have a wisdom tooth pulled when i was 12 weeks pregnant as it had broken. I had also never had any teeth pulled and didn’t know what to expect. It was surprisingly easy. First the procedure itself only took about 10 minutes, they use a different kind of novacaine that doesnt have adrrenaline in it so its safe for the baby. It does numb you plenty, but it wears off a bit quicker then normal novacaine, it had worn off for me by the time i got home half an hour after. The procedure didnt hurt like at all, i thought for sure when they said I would feel pressure that what they meant was pain, but it was totally pain free and i didn’t feel a thing. My oral suregon didn’t put a stitch in after she pulle dthe tooth, I know some do, but mine just left it to close on it’s own. They ahve you bite on gauze for the rest of the day, cahnging the peice of gauze like every twnety minutes till it stops bleeding.
Once the novacaine wore off i thought it was definately going to hurt so bad…it was sore, but it wasnt nearly as terrible as i was expecting, i took tylenol and it was plenty for me. The day i had it doen i spent pretty much the rest of the day taking tylenol and napping and it was easy. It was sore for a couple days after, but nothing bad at all, tylenol is plenty. And after about a week, probably a little less it didnt bother me at all anymore.
Taking care of it is easy, you just have to rinse with warm salt water a couple times a day to prevent infection, tyou have to be careful not to brush that spot the first couple days so you dont remove the blood clot that forms in there to close it up, and you dont want to use mouth wash for a week or two as that is too strong and would be painful and remove the clot. I was super paranoid about getting dry socket or an infection, but i was fine, just rinse with the salt water a lot. And eating you will be surprised how ok you are, you’ll just have to be careful to chew on the opposite side of the mouth so you dont get food in the hole, and always rinse after you eat.
All in all it’s WAY easier then you would expect
I am 27 weeks pregnant and a fourth of my molar just broke TODAY. I have an oral surgery consultation Tuesday. For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been dealing with a severe headache, to the point where I went to the ER. (I didn’t know why). Now I have bronchitis and the doctor (THE ER DOCTOR) gave me Codeine with Tylenol. Codeine is a narcotic. I didn’t know if it was safe, so I went to my OBGYN today and he said it was fine and also gave me an inhaler and some quick antibiotics. Also, When I figured out it was my tooth and wisdom teeth (Oh yea, my wisdom teeth are impacted; fun huh) causing the pain, the dentist gave me Darvecet, which has Tylenol as well, and an antibiotic. When I was younger, my previous dentist and orthodontist decided to take out 3 of my permanent molars. I have to get braces and they thought this would make room for 4 wisdom teeth. Apparently, they need to go back to school. I got my braces off at about 16. When I was 20, my teeth started shifting, because of my wisdom teeth.
We are both in the same boat, but the piece that is coming out causes no pain, so I suppose the root is dead. I would just like to have it out. and I’ll fix my teeth after I deliver, because I currently need 5 teeth removed. I think I may keep the wisdom teeth. They are somewhat straight. Then get more braces or a retainer. The pain is not that bad, from what I remember. Having 3 molars pulled out, I was given novacaine and the gas, but I went home and ate a hamburger 4 hours after that. SLOWLY. See if you can take Darvocet, or the generic of it; since it has Tylenol. It worked sooooo much better. I had a massive isolated headache, bad to where it was throbbing and made my cry and scream out in pain. My right eye was also turning red from the pressure. Just be careful because too much Acetamenophen can damage your liver, so account for everything you take.
