Question by D: How long would doctor normally prescribe?
How long would a doctor normally prescribe a medication for oxycontin or morphine? I know these are both narcotics, so I’m wondering what the ‘normal’ length of time a doc would give it to a patient so they didn’t get addicted.
I’m aware that docs only prescribe a month at a time, but I’m wondering how many times they consider safe to do that – for how many total months would they allow someone to be on oxycontin or morphine.

my pain management doc has had me on 10/325 percocet for over a year. i take 6 a day for back pain. i take it on a regular schedule and not more than needed.
he does a random call in where pts have to have a pill count done and a urine test to make sure they have the right amount of med in their system.
he’s been a very good doc. i had a real hard time finding one that would listen and do the tests i needed.

usually doctors won’t prescribe any more than a month at a time, because they monitor chronic.severe pain cases closely or at least they should. both of the medications mentioned are severely controlled, so i doubt any reasonable pharmacist would dispense a large amount at one time.
It depends on the doctor. If you’re in a pain management clinic, you’re there because you’re going to need medication of some kind, be it narcotics or not, for the forseeable future. I’ve been on Oxycontin for a year. It isn’t intended for short term pain, only chronic pain. You don’t become an addict if you have real pain issues, you become dependant. That is VERY different from addiction, which is a behavioral issue.
