A deceased family member consistently drank too much at social occasions all her adult life. However, it was (usually) not a problem at other times. Is this person considered an alcoholic?

An alcoholic cant control it. And really we cant know if she was or not based on this bit of information. But its usually not hard to figure out.

An alcoholic is someone who needs to drink – usually every day. Many people have tendancies to over-indulge at social functions. While this isn’t the healthiest, it’s also not indicative of an addiction.
Unless this person drank daily, it’s unlikely they were addicted.
