Question by Jay: Quitting The Narcotics – Withdrawals are killing me?
Well I have quite a history with narcotics, I use to take at least 15-20 percocet a day..not sure how, but I did it. Then I quit cold turkey (I was on them for about a year) I only had mental withdrawals, nothing really physical..I never really got over that and I quit them in October of 2007. Well I have been horribly addicted to Vicodin for about a good 4 months as of now. I stopped taking them about a week ago and the withdrawals are killing me. I have been horribly nauseous everyday since I stopped taking them and I have been very anxious, depressed, shaky, cold sweats, can’t sleep, can’t eat..and so on and so forth. Is there anyway for me to tackle these withdrawals? I’m getting quite desperate now and am just thinking about going back to the pills, so all this will stop. Can anybody lend any insight for me?
I appreciate all the advice. Another thing I’d like to add is I don’t have insurance. I was getting the pills from a friend who had/has no idea I was taking them strictly for recreation. She thought I needed them for aches and pains I normally had and she had no use for them, so she gave them to me. But, I have no insurance, so I can’t really go to a doctor. At the rate I’m going, I have a feeling I will need anti-depressants though. Or something to just calm me down and get me back to normal.

Instead of quitting using the “cold turkey” approach, how about try cutting back your vicodin more slowly? By gradually withdrawing from narcotics, you may spare yourself some of the unpleasant symptoms that arise from more abrupt discontinuation. In addition, you will be less likely to have severe reactions (e.g., death, seizure).
Best of luck to you,

Go see your doctor he or she might be able to help you by prescribing something. You’ve come this far so don’t give up now. The physical withdrawals wont last forever.

withdrawal are like that, i suggest you seek medical help but dont go back on the pills unless a doctor tells you to. Your body is just rejecting the pills and adjusting to coping without them. it will stop eventually but i would get advice. you wont be in lots of trouble so dont be scared to ask.
I was addicted to oxycontin for 3 years. very strong opiate like drug. the withdrawals were horrible. get into AA meetings. Also, see a therapist that can write you an anti-depressant. This will curb the cravings. I had to go cold turkey too. It sucks, but since you’ve gotten this far, don’t give up. Change everything around you. Your friends, job, everything if this is a battle like it sounds to be. I had to surround myself with sober people and I slipped up a few times, but i did finally quit. i am so glad i don’t have to worry about how to get them anymore or the withdrawal days. get in with a therapist and explain everything. they will help you. good luck.
