Question by Kathryn J: In Extreme Pain, Need Root Canal, No Insurance, No Job, What Can I Do ?
My son who is 35 years old has a dental problem, that I can’t afford or able to provide any monetary help. I only get 9.00 a month to live on, because of a heart attack and diabetes among other things.
He went to the free dental clinic of SW Washington State and was told he needed 2 Root Canals. But the Free Dental Clinic does not have equipment to do root canals. He has No Insurance, No Money, No Job. He is doing good to excellent on getting his life back on track from meth addiction and the courts have have his time tied up each week with 1 court date, 3 AA meetings and 3 Clinic counseling meetings. My suggestion to him was why don’t he have them pull them and he said they won’t. He has been on an antibiotic and he is in extreme pain, what can he do ? Any Suggestions ?

if it becomes emergency they have to pull it there period.

Have you checked to see if there is a dental school in your area? Usually they have payment plans and are more affordable and usually have walk in emergency clinics. Hope this helps.
visit your local Social Services office….they should be able to help with that
YES get a SCRIP for ANTIBIOTICS i did that when I couldn’t afford an extraction and it REALLY HELED until i was lucky enough to get out of the RED NECK RED STATE SOUTH and come back to NYC and get on MEDICAID and have it extracted………but it really HELPED for nearly a year until i had it removed. Also go to the EMERGENCY ROOM for the PILLS they may give you PAIN KILLERS as well with the ANTIBIOTICS
you might want to check around for a dental place that will set up a payment plan. Some will do that or maybe he will be able to get some help through the state in which you live
You may be able to go to a church or a place that helps others, and tell them all about his recovery and see if they can help. If they can’t the only thing that he can do is to get it pulled. He might be able to back to the Free clinic and tell them just to pull them, so he can afford it. Root canal’s hurt I know that for sure. After my root canal they put a cap on it. Those eventually fall off, and then you are back with a rotted tooth. It’s better and cheaper in the long run to get it pulled. Good Luck
DENTAL SCHOOLS AT ALL OF THE MAJOR UNIVERSITIES HAVE DENTAL SCHOOLS WITH WORK WITH INSURANCE, NO INSURANCE, DO A SLIDING SCALE PAY RATE. OR MAYBE EVEN FREE FOR THE INDIGENT PEOPLE HOMELESS
Pity you are not in Thailand. Extractions and root canals are dirt cheap and are professionally done in places like Chiang Mai.What about Mexico? I am assuming you are American
Extractions are relatively easy procedure. Surely there is some compassionate dentist who will do the job.
If it is a non essential teeth like the wisdom then extraction is the go. If they are important teeth then well it is better to do a RCT
Hello, I agree with a previous poster about trying the ED if the pain is that bad. If it is not taken care of properly you could end up with a pretty bad infection or absess. ED’s cannot legally turn you away even if you cannot pay. Most hospitals have financial counselors who will work out something with the patient. I also agree with trying a dental clinic at a dental school. The wait might be longer and visit may take longer, but since all students have to get approval and be watched by a licensed dentist, it’s no different. Extraction is a very last resort. I know it may cost less to get it just pulled..but you really should try to keep as many possible as you can! If you go to the dentist and he/she feels you have an infection you will be required to be on antibiotics for atleast 48 hrs before they do any type of procedure. I know this first hand from a previous visit of mine. Well good luck, hope you get the help you need!
don’t bother with root canals, they are a waste of time and money… The tooth will eventually fail… Get em out… NOW!
