Question by Bill: I am on SSI and found a Letter to the Editor in my local News paper disterbing?
Me and my wife are both on SSI Don’t have any kids, Don’t Own a Car, Don’t get drink or Drink Daily or even monthly if at all, Don’t use drugs, and Don’t Buy Expensive sea food, and own a Cell Phone, but are wise and Health conscience when It comes to Grocie Shopping. In Reading My Local Newspaper Found This Letter To The Editor Disturbing Because Because I Feel The Writers suggestion Would Put An Unfair Disadvantage On People that justly Live off SSI How Should I Respond to the letter In a Wise and Respectful Manor But Still Justly Di fend My Self and Others on SSI Who Don’t Fully Misuse The System The Way The People Did in the Paper Article Describes.
Here is The Article from The Paper Below:
Title: “People should have to work for what they have”
Body: ” Editor:
I am a hard-working, single parent. I work full-time, always have. My gripe? Recently I was in a grocery store doing some major budgeting. I was walking by the sea food counter and I happen to see two people who I know receive SSI. I overheard them ordering lobster tails and huge bags of shrimp. I about fell though the floor. Thease same people drink alcohol on a daily basis. My question is, how do they get away with it? The ironic thing is, I see the same people later that day at Wal-Mart. I was behind them in the checkout lane. The Female made the comment “It’s only money.” We, the taxpayers, are the ones who give them the money on the first of every month. I really think thease people need to account for every penny they spend. They need to be evaluated regularly. I feel bad for all the state employees whose pay checks were delayed, but we continued to pay thease people. I really feel something needs to be done. They know how to mow a lawn. Let them work for some of their assistance, like we do. I am so outraged at what I see everyday. They have cars, cell phones, their alcohol and drugs. And here I sit worrying how I am going to afford school clothes for my children. I hope somebody reads this and is able to do something about it.

I love Lobster and Shrimp also.
What do you think? Answer below!

I am retired and live on ss also. I am more like you then the couple described in the letter to the editor. But I do know some people like that. They continue to smoke, drink barbecue steak etc and don’t take care of them selves. I am sometimes able to send some money to my son to buy clothes/school supplies for my grandchildren.
I don’t think people will generalize from that letter. But if you just correct your letter for spelling and typos I think you could send that in to the paper. That, I think, would make your point.
All the things I’ve done to live within my ss means has sure helped me feel better. Seldom do I eat processed food or fast food, I quit smoking years ago (who can afford it now), seldom drink. I am back to the basics. By gosh I think I have even lost a few pounds. Got rid of my car so I use my bicycle a lot so I get excercise every day. Luckily public transportation gets me any where I want or need to go.
I have met a few people who think just cause a homeless guy gets a free hot dog that the economy will tank. I usually ask them what they would rather do, buy him a few hotdogs or sponsor a banker’s party. Geez how they turn us all against one another.
Keep the faith and good luck.
