My childs father is an alcoholic, basically it wrecks relationships, wastes money, kills brain cells, causes blackouts, fights,memory loss. liver damage, brain damage, ascites of the abdomen (when the belly swells out, due to liver damage).Can make some violent and aggressive.

I think it is most helpful to view it as a type of allergy where the suffer has an abnormal reaction to alcohol. Craving is part of the allergy, as is the blindness to the damage the drinker causes. There isn’t some sort of “histamine blocker” that will make an alcoholic normal, nor does pure reason work to control it. It’s not only a physical illness but a mental one as well.
