Can you become an alcoholic without getting completely wasted?

Question by Wraith Queen: Can you become an alcoholic without getting completely wasted?
My friend told me that the only way to become an alcoholic is if you frequently get so drunk that you pass out, forget things, etc. I always thought you could become an alcoholic if you frequently just get normally drunk. Which is correct? (Sources would be great too.)
We’re arguing this because he drinks frequently and alcoholism runs in his family, but he says he won’t become one unless he drinks till he blacks out and forgets everything.

It’s hard to say if you will become an alcoholic or not. Heck it’s hard to say who is an alcoholic and who isn’t. It’s not something that has a hard and fast definition. I would say that if your friend’s drinking causes problems in his life, then perhaps he has a problem.

The definition of an alcoholic is someone who cannot function without alcohol, and has a compulsive need to drink it. They do not need to be drinking to the point of blacking out, they just need to be unable to function without it.
