Question by emily321: How can i stop my brother’s 6 months pregnant girlfriend from binge drinking? He isn’t around to stop her?
She is an alcoholic, and she’s been calling my family slurring and and hiccuping and angry. But she denies that she has even had a drop to drink. We are really convinced she’s that she is drinking. My brother is away for 6 weeks, and we feel responsible to make sure that she does not harm the baby. Could use some brainstorming on how to handle the situation.

The only real way I can think of is to invite to stay with you whilst your brother is away. Drinking during pregnancy can cause serious brain damage to the baby, which I am sure you are aware of.
If she doesn’t want to stay with you, try arranging to catch up with her a few times a week a least that way you will be able to know for sure if she is drinking or not as you will be able to smell it on her.

Call CPS on her.
I hate to say this, because she’s infuriating me by doing this, and I don’t even know her… but there’s not really a whole lot you can do. If she’s determined to drink, she’s going to drink. I know you’re worried, but if she’s been drinking this much already, she’s probably already caused some harm to the baby. She’s your brother’s girlfriend, but she’s not your responsibility. You can’t really make her stop drinking if she doesn’t want to.
With that said… Offer support. See if she’ll come stay with you or your family. Call her up to talk to her, and explain that you’re worried about her, and the baby. If she denies she’s drinking, you can still try to just hang out with her- let her know that you care. Let her know the damage drinking can do to an unborn child- even just a small amount of alcohol.
