Question by Matt: I am a recovering addict, getting ready to have major surgery. Any ideas on non-narcotic pain killers?
I will need them(pain killers) once I leave hospital.

Ask about Ultram or Tramadol. It is non narcotic. I am impressed with your commitment to your recovery. I hope your surgery goes well. Keep us posted on how things go. Good luck !

First congrats on knowing that you have a problem and you’re willing to keep that problem away from you even during this time.
When I had son, instead of taking pain killers so that I could stay alert, the Dr said to take 2 Tylenol and 2 Aleve and this is considered prescription strength pain killers.
Best of luck, prayers, and Blessings all around.
you don’t have to worry about that. your surgeon will prescribe you with the pain killers..
good luck!!!
Two things come to mind. First, explain to the doctors about your previous addiction, the should be able to prescribe appropriately.
Second, people taking narcotics for real pain pain due to accident or surgery rarely get addicted to them, it happens but it is rare. I have never read why this is true but it is.
Even chronic pain sufferers with a long time of narcotics use usually find it relatively easy to stop drug use if the source of the pain is stopped.
Drug addiction seems to be somewhat related to the willingness to become addicted and that seems to be based more on emotional problems or social problems, not physical ones.
I believe the surgeon knows all about your past history and won’t put you on anything that would risk causing a relapse. I’m not sure what type of surgery you’re having but I would suspect if a painkiller is needed, the strongest the surgeon will prescribe is tylenol #2.
Hope everything goes well.
