Minimization: Thinking they don’t have a “problem” and they can “control” their addiction
Diversion: Pointing out someone else’s problems that are “worse”. Focusing on other issues. It’s not the drugs, it’s the girlfriend/job/etc.
Hostility: Saying it’s “their life” and not your business. They are an adult and can handle themselves.
Projection: Projecting their problems onto the person trying to help.
Intellectualizing: The person may start using big words and trying to disconnect the problem from their emotional issues that are bringing them to the addiction.
