Can anyone in mental health or drug addiction counseling give me examples of how an addict might use minimization, projection, intellectualizing, diversion, and hostility?

minimization – Its not THAT bad… i onyl use it to de-stress, I dont really have a problem /w it. projection – YOU’re the one making a big deal about it… I onyl use because of what my dad did….
diversion _ why dont we talk about YOUR gambling problem
hostility – How dare you tell me what to do… I dont need any of this

    Minimization: Thinking they don’t have a “problem” and they can “control” their addiction

    Diversion: Pointing out someone else’s problems that are “worse”. Focusing on other issues. It’s not the drugs, it’s the girlfriend/job/etc.

    Hostility: Saying it’s “their life” and not your business. They are an adult and can handle themselves.

    Projection: Projecting their problems onto the person trying to help.

    Intellectualizing: The person may start using big words and trying to disconnect the problem from their emotional issues that are bringing them to the addiction.
