Q&A: Is college Binge Drinking Alcoholism?

Question by : Is college Binge Drinking Alcoholism?
So I’m about to be a junior in college and I tihnk I’m all drank out. I drank for the past 2 years 3-4 times a week every week. Been drinking steadily for 3 years but got worse the past 2. Ive stopped about 2 months ago. and its been the worst 2 months of my life. I dunno if its from alcohol or what but it sucks. I thought it was normal I see other college students drink twice what i do and dont seem to have any bad side affects. I would get hangovers for days. I think I know the answer to my question just by typing this out but it feels good. Was a pretty healthy and athletic person (played d1 lacrosse) until I stopped drinking. Had a little affect on my athleticism, nothing to major.

It’s alcoholism. You are probably going through withdraws. Lots of college students are quite the alcoholics.

If you go to AA, you will probably learn to be a “real alcoholic” and probably spend the rest of your life “fighting” your “disease”. One of the most important ways of fighting your disease is called by Step group members “carrying the message.” It is called “proselytizing” by the rest of us.

More important than asking your self if you are an “alcoholic” is asking yourself what you were doing by drinking? Where you using it to escape anxiety? Or depression? Was it your only way of socializing?

And what are you doing now? If you have given up many things important to you (like sports, or getting laid) at the same time you quit drinking, maybe it is the other things you have given up that are the crux of your discomfort.
