Question by connie c: Does anyone know anything about alcoholism and liver disease. My mom’s an alcoholic and I need advice!!!?
My mom is an alcoholic and has been for about 5 years. Her face is puffy and her abdomen is bloated. Her arms and legs are just flesh and bone. She doesn’t look healthy. She is in total denial that she has a problem. On top of that, her mother died a few years ago of cirrhosis of the liver. She is now taking care of her boyfriend who lives with her and is in the final stages of cirrhosis. Her boyfriend is dying in her home, right in front of her and she continues to drink. I honestly don’t know what her “rock bottom” is, that is, if it’s not death. She lives in another state so there’s not much I can personally do to help her. Can somebody help me? I don’t know what kind of help I’m seeking here, but if anybody has any advice on how I should confront her or if anyone knows anything about liver disease and whether or not I should be concerned about the health of her liver based on her physical appearance, it would greatly be appreciated.

Best answer:

Answer by hmugnolo
Im so sorry to hear about you situation, i don’t know many facts about it but i will try to give you my best advice. i think that based on your description, your mother is in serious need of medical attention. it is inevitable that an alcoholic will have a lot of damage to the liver. confronting her, while not an easy thing to do, is a good idea. im not sure of a specific number to give you, but i no there are many alcoholic support groups, and if you go to school you should try talking to your guidance counselor about what you could do. try to get another adult and/or someone who deals with alcoholics involved to give your mother the help she needs. Good luck to you and your mother, i hope things work out for you both.

Question by : my friend is a drug addict and alcoholic, I need advice and info on narcotics anonymous meetings?
My friend has a problem with drinking and using heroin… he says he knows has a problem but says that he will only stop if he can do it on his own terms. He wont go to rehab or the hospital for detox, or attend a Narcotics Anonymous meeting.
Any advice?

Also, I’m interested in attending an open NA meeting just so I can learn more about what I can do to help and better understand what my friend is going through. Can you just show up and go, or do you have to let them know your coming (or do you need to have a membership?)?
And whether or not you need a membership is it COMPLETELY anonymous? I’m 15, I dont want my parents to find out and A) think that I’m using, or B) try to force me to stop seeing and helping my friend.

Best answer:

Answer by 1701
You are not going to be able to force someone to do something (detox, rehab, NA, etc) they don’t want to do. If your friend has an addiction, “do it on own his own terms” is probably just his way of rationalizing and really avoiding the issue of getting help.

NA mtgs are anonymous, like AA mtgs, but do not expect that you will receive some sort of direct counseling as to how to deal w/ your friend @ a meeting – that’s not really what a NA mtg is about – it’s more like people sharing their personal experiences and gaining strength or resolve through that sharing. If you want to learn more about NA, including where to find a mtg near you, you can go to their site http://www.na.org/ and click on the links “Find a meeting” or “Information about NA,” which offers basic info for potential members as well as for non-addict family members.

The website (or a local chapter) may offer info or other resources to help you & your friend deal w/ your problem. If in doubt about showing up to a meeting, you can call beforehand to find out what’s what. Good luck.

Question by TheSweetestOne: Anyone have advice on how to minimize my ex getting visitation rights with my daughter? He’s addicted to meth
He just got out of rehab and he’s trying to persue court ordered visitation. He has one heck of a shady divorce/family law lawyer pushing him to do it, even though he keeps repeatedly saying he is still struggling and is thinking about going back into rehab. I really don’t have money for a lawyer and need ideas about what to ask for in mediation since the ball _IS_ in my court.

Just so you know, if he were still here in state I wouldn’t have such a problem with him coming to see her and things of that nature, but he is on the east coast, and I live in the midwest. I seriously have issues with him taking her so far away!! Any ideas, anyone out there who’s been through a similar situation??

BTW, my ex is pretty impressionable as far as what I say to him buy his lawyer always seems to smooth him over. If he takes me to mediation I really want to make it hard for him.

Best answer:

Answer by serf
Hire a PI to get pictures of him buying/using meth.

Question by rachelk828: Any advice for a daughter with a vicodin-addicted father with no desire to go to rehab?
My father keeps returning to narcotics. Him and my mother own a business and he’s killing it with the abuse. Without the business, we can’t afford the house, which won’t sell in Michigan’s horrible economic climate. I feel trapped between trying to make him understand the situation and finding a way to plan out how to sell the house and not go bankrupt. Help!

Help!

Question by Valeria Fountain: I DESPERATELY NEED Marriage Advice for two young people…please respect my honesty…?
Here is my outpouring. Please don’t just answer with get a divorce, or get counseling because I need more than that. I met my husband in June 2008. He worked in the mall in the store across from mine. We were both 23. I was instantly (as was he) sexually attracted and exchanged numbers. The next day, we hung out and watched a movie and made out and he pressured me for sex but I said no. He smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol but knew I was straight-edge. We talked off and on, I flaked on him a few times and we ended up not talking again until maybe late late June 2008. He ended up getting arrested July 11 2008 and I was the first person he called. I instantly felt my heart break–there was something in him I needed and I truly cared about him. He was in jail for almost 3 months and we wrote eachother EVERY DAY. I visited him 2 days a week and would just sit outside the jail window when he didn’t have visits because I knew he could see me. He got out September 24th, and we (through the course of our letters and phone calls) became INSEPERABLE. He asked me to marry him and I said yes. We were married September 27th. When he got out, he said he wanted to change his life. No more smoking, drinking, he was continuing to stay off meth (he’d been clean for 9 months at the time) and now…we’re 7 months married, I’m 7 months pregnant, he’s smoking now, drinking alcohol, disappearing EVERY weekend and will NOT tell me where he is. He has relapsed with meth one time. I am not a saint in this. Because of my distrust, I look up his phone records, I go through his phone, even text strange numbers that he’s called late at night asking who it is. He lies about what friends’ house he’s going to be at, he tells me he’ll (for example) be home at 11pm on friday night and doesn’t come home until SUNDAY MORNING. I do not think he is cheating–he has my name tattooed on his neck and his wedding ring line is tanned on his hand. He swears he lives in the movie 8 Mile. He wants to be a rapper (he’s white…) so he (after he decided to FINALLY be honest about where he goes every weekend) goes and raps with his homeboys. He says he lies because he knows I’ll hate his friends but I tell him–I didn’t marry a rapper. I married a guy who was just as clingy as me. Not an alcohol drinking, smoking, lying, idiot that would leave me alone every weekend while I’m at home, 7 months pregnant. We have sex every couple of days and when I confronted him with my need to have sex daily (at the onset of marriage, we had sex three or four times a day) he says he’s cool. The truth came out when we argued in the car two nights ago: he told me to get in the backseat of his car and he was taking me to get some food at Sonic while he freestyled and drove with a 32 oz. Miller Highlife in his lap. I begged him not to drive drinking with me (and our unborn son) in the car plus he’s on probation so…but when we left Sonic and were sitting in a parking lot, I told him I wanted to sit in the passenger seat up front. So I got out and he started in on me because he thinks he doesn’t satisfy me sexually (which I NEVER said..just that we don’t do it enough.) and I said no, we don’t have sex at all. So he drove off and I was in this parking lot barefoot at 11pm. I didn’t know what to do–he sped over to me really quick and screamed out the window he was going to bring back 4 or 5 black guys to f**k (me) good and then drove to the gas station nearby and stopped a guy presumably asking if he wanted to have sex with me. I started to walk to the grocery store to use the phone to call his sister and he came back and asked the grocery cart kid if he wanted to **** his wife’s loose sl*tty p*ssy. Eventually, he told me to get back in the car and we came home and laid in bed. I got so mad I started talking so filthy to him and crying asking him how he could call his wife and the mother of his child a slut and comment on my body like he did and he said it was true. LONG STORY SHORT: my husband and I have physically fought once before, we are constantly emotionally abusing each other, but at the same time, he’ll come home with my name tattooed on his neck and I feel sick thinking of him not in my or our son’s life. How can I stop being so controlling and is my controlling behavior leading him to act like this? What can we do…? We aren’t trailer trash hicks but I swear I feel like it sometimes.

Best answer:

Answer by Fatima Campbell
That’s some serious stuff! But what I have to say is if a man(your husband) will treat you and embarrass you like that, he doesn’t care for you. Not saying he doesn’t love you but if he cared he would want to protect you and not leave you in harms way(with no shoes, outside). He made a private, which could have been avoided, argument public and inviting random people into y’all business. Yes he really needs to work on his drug problems, because that is not something you should want your child to be raised up around

Question by Yo!: brother coming off of drugs and not thinking straight, any advice?
my little brother is 17 and started smoking weed at 14, then recently started experimenting with coke, crack, ex, mushrooms and meth. He seems to have gotten off of everything but marijuana but now he has trouble thinking straight and thinks people are out to kill him and that our family is conspiring against him. He is constantly yelling in the house for no reason and if anyone tries to calm him down he gets really mad and usually throws things around. Its like hes a little kid. the worst is when he screams at my mom and makes her cry or when he beats on his door with a hammer to get his frustrations out. i try talking to him all the time but his defense is “you just dont get what im going through so whatever you say doesnt matter.” he also says he doesnt want to change or get off marijuana. during counseling he fakes like he’s ok and off drugs and everything is normal, but once he gets home he’s back to his tantrums. what should we tell him?what should we do?any advice?

Best answer:

Answer by moocowmurphy
REHAB. that’s the only thing that can work, here. and i don’t mean once a day counseling, i mean a live-in, 24 hour supervision rehab center. you can’t help him, trust me. there’s no way. the only thing you can do is stonewall him until he chills out once he’s done coming down– and this can take up to a month. so if you can’t stand it anymore, rehab is the answer, but if that’s not an option, the only thing to do is just ignore him until every last vestige of addiction is gone from his system.

My husband had been addicted to perocet and fentynol suckers. He went to rehab and detoxed but left before his treatment was over. The same day he got home, he went to the same doc that gave him the meds and got on Methadone. He didn’t tell his doc that he had went to rehab and detoxed off of it. He has since started going back to previous behaviors, lying, hiding things, etc. I have suggested that he go back into treatment but he got very angry. Is it usual for someone that has detoxed off of narcotics to go right to using Methadone? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
