My mom is an alcoholic and has been for about 5 years. Her face is puffy and her abdomen is bloated. Her arms and legs are just flesh and bone. She doesn’t look healthy. She is in total denial that she has a problem. On top of that, her mother died a few years ago of cirrhosis of the liver. She is now taking care of her boyfriend who lives with her and is in the final stages of cirrhosis. Her boyfriend is dying in her home, right in front of her and she continues to drink. I honestly don’t know what her “rock bottom” is, that is, if it’s not death. She lives in another state so there’s not much I can personally do to help her. Can somebody help me? I don’t know what kind of help I’m seeking here, but if anybody has any advice on how I should confront her or if anyone knows anything about liver disease and whether or not I should be concerned about the health of her liver based on her physical appearance, it would greatly be appreciated.

Im so sorry to hear about you situation, i don’t know many facts about it but i will try to give you my best advice. i think that based on your description, your mother is in serious need of medical attention. it is inevitable that an alcoholic will have a lot of damage to the liver. confronting her, while not an easy thing to do, is a good idea. im not sure of a specific number to give you, but i no there are many alcoholic support groups, and if you go to school you should try talking to your guidance counselor about what you could do. try to get another adult and/or someone who deals with alcoholics involved to give your mother the help she needs. Good luck to you and your mother, i hope things work out for you both.

Just so you know, if he were still here in state I wouldn’t have such a problem with him coming to see her and things of that nature, but he is on the east coast, and I live in the midwest. I seriously have issues with him taking her so far away!! Any ideas, anyone out there who’s been through a similar situation??

BTW, my ex is pretty impressionable as far as what I say to him buy his lawyer always seems to smooth him over. If he takes me to mediation I really want to make it hard for him.

It sounds like it would be a variant of sociology and criminal justice. It would certainly prepare you to apply for an MSW and enter social work or to do an MA in psych. You might want to look at a BSW if you know you want to go into social work.

I dated a guy for over 2 1/2 years whom had been battling addiction to drugs. We were in a long-distance relationship, so I was not aware of how seriously he was involved & the extent of his using. As far as I knew, he was receiving psychiatric treatment & counselling and participating in a methadone program. Apparently he had an entire “secret” life I knew nothing about. I can only imagine the things he might have been involved in.

Nowadays you’ve got every Tom, Dick and Harry going to the bar and sipping Wild Turkey straight up. They go there with their unshaven faces and pick up all the hot chicks that love the manly, rusted around the edges, stuck at the bottom of a bottle guys.

These guys, who are totally stable mentally, are siphoning the small puddles of glamor that remain in my sad, dark, dirty life.

These guys don’t know the first thing about draining sorrows, and fifths at the same time. Why are they picking up my ladies, and turning what should be the rare glamorous alcoholic into a dimestore reject?

I don’t shave, drink whiskey straight, shower only when I’m to dizzy to sleep, and have messy hair when I’m ALONE!!! I also punch walls, and have a heart of gold.

Alcoholism isn’t glamorized. It is cheapened by stereotypes. People think that alcoholics are lazy people who don’t want to work, homeless people who have given up on life, men who want to drown their sorrows in some woman’s “”bleep bleep bleep”", etc… And THAT’S what I’M sick of.
