My brother was sitting at the computer and all of a sudden he blacked out. He said all he could remember was being in front of the computer then waking up to himself hitting his head on the wall. He has never had this happen to him before and he is not an alcoholic, so what could be the cause?

Best answer:

Answer by Matthew
Blunt trauma to the head will work. I hit a metal pole with my head at high speed once and I blacked out.

Question by : How at risk for a heart attack is a late 20′s person after drug and alcohol abuse?
I am in my late 20′s and have been suffering from anxiety attacks. But these “new” anxiety attacks are much different than anxiety attacks I had in my early 20′s and teens. I have frequent episodes of shortness of breath at random, and pain in my chest / back almost daily now. The reason I am concerned is because:
1. I was an overweight child / teenager
2. I suffered from anorexia for a few years around age 20 which took me down to 100lbs (I’m 5’5).
3. Following my recovery from anorexia I abused cocaine and crack cocaine in extreme amounts
4. After I quit doing drugs, I took diet pills for a long time. Phentermine and one other pill they added after a few months to make it a “combo” of 2 diet pills.
5. During the time I started taking the diet pills, I began to binge drink. I eventually quit the diet pills but continued to binge drink for 6 or 7 years (up until a few months ago). I binge drank to the point of blacking out an average of 4 times a week, give or take. I quit drinking because my anxiety was becoming so extreme with the hangovers that I could not socialize or go out in public, and sometimes my head would begin to shake for no reason.
6. I have smoked on and off since age 12. Most heavily in my mid teens and early 20′s, about a pack – pack and a half a day.I quit for good 6 months ago because I was having trouble breathing and I noticed my lower legs would swell, and that didn’t happen until I started smoking again that particular time.

I no longer drink other than a drink or two every few weeks, and no longer smoke and haven’t abused drugs in at least 5 years. But I get weak / dizzy / breathless spells. One thing I tried to express to my doctor was that my anxiety attacks used to cause racing heart rate, but now it’s chest pains / shortness of breath that cause my anxiety attacks, if that makes sense. I have these “episodes” that are not always accompanied by racing heart, and I try to keep my anxiety at bay when I’m not feeling well.

The pain in my chest is in the center, and squeezes out to the sides, and the pain in my back is as if someone were standing behind me, poking me with a finger (very, very sore though). I also have pain in my left shoulder and inside of my left arm. Sometimes I feel this discomfort up the left side of my neck / jaw. Not extreme, but discomfort none the less.

Any advice is helpful, I have not disclosed my complete history to my doctor, because my insurance would most likely not have covered me at all. Sad country we live in about that. I am just tired of hearing that it’s digestion / anxiety. My anxiety has never manifested like this before. I get heart palpitations so bad now that they sometimes make me feel like I’m going to vomit or pass out. I’ve been to urgent care, but my episode had passed by then, and my ekg was normal. I know an older woman that suffered anxiety attacks and always had normal ekg’s, but ended up with a pacemaker once they eventually “caught” the problem. Whats anyone’s thoughts?

For the record, I have a pretty healthy lifestyle now. Comical as it seems, I always ate pretty healthy and got exercise, lol.

Best answer:

Answer by David
there is a medical questionnaire called realage. it,s on the web. take it. i,m 63, and healthy. i think my realage was 59. see what the quiz says. they will ask you lots of questions.

Question by Gary M: Is there something a person can do to help a close relative who is on narcotic pain pills to get off?
I would like to know an answer to that question if a person is just taking narcotic pain medicine because they are addicted and don’t have pain. Do you stay away from them and act like you don’t want anything to do with them until they get off of it, or do you try to support them in other ways? Second, I would like to know what to do if a person is both addicted and taking the medicine because it is the only thing they can take to relieve serious chronic (on-going) pain?

Best answer:

Answer by cjlintexas
if they are using the meds to get high, then yes they have a big problem. There is little you can do to stop them, until and if they want to stop using though. You might try an al-anon meeting for some insight. You are walking a fine line between helping and enabling, and not knowing you all, no one can say which is which for you.

I have been taking very strong opiates for about 2 years now. I do have a dependency on them for sure, but I take them strictly for serious never ending chronic pain. They provide a level of relief that lets me keep on with a more or less normal life. Many doctors and of course the feds, feel that living with any kind of pain is better than being dependent on a drug, but until they have walked in my shoes they havent a clue.

Hang in there and good luck

Question by Anne L: How will binge drinking (excess of 5 drinks) two times weekly affected a person with heart disease?
I am wondering if there is a medical doc out there who could give me some insight into a situation with a loved one? He is diagnosed with heart disease and the related med. conditions that go with this dx. He has also had kidney stone problems, new issues, for the past two months. Seems after he binge drinks, only red wine, of course….Good for the heart. He has to miss work the next day and attributes it to upset stomack and kidney stone pain. He has been a long time heavy drinker for most of his life and he is 51. Tryglycerd. levels not in good zone and either is HDL, too low. Continues to drink and has become emotionally and physcially numb. Zero sex drive and desire for affection and wants to end our relationship because I need more. Many issues here. Is it the alcohol. I keep thinking he is going to die soon if he continues with his denial.

Best answer:

Answer by whatelsewhatever
He is an alcoholic..he needs serious help, BUT he has to want the help. He is causing serious damage to his body and hurting everyone around him. You can go to a Alanon group (not sure if I spelled it right) for partners and/or family of alcoholics, they are free and all over the US

I know a couple of people who smoke marijuana, and although it’s a drug I don’t see it as a drug that ruins lives. I don’t agree with those who use it, but again, it’s not like cocaine, meth or heroin. Those drugs cause people to abuse others, steal and lie, and most of all they break-up families. They also cause health issues and a person’s physical appearance changes as a result of using these drugs.

That’s my opinion.

Question by Trinity: How do I help this person?
I am very worried about someone close to me. Before I knew them they were a tweaker for about three years, he told me he used meth. Once they quit meth, and ever since then he has alcohol problems, he is an alcoholic. Also, he takes ecstasy probably about three times a month. He has had a real hard life and he uses to make time go by faster, he uses because he has a lot of emotional problems, there’s a a lot of pain hes holding inside. He wont go to counseling, there’s no way. I can stand back and watch him practically kill himself. I really love him. What do I do?

Best answer:

Answer by babiee_girl
maybe you should just try talking to him… probably all he needs is someone to listen.. good luck

Question by Abigail: Does a person with alcoholism in their genes have a chance of drinking normally?
If a man has a high percentage of blood relatives with alcoholism, does this mean he is more likely to misuse alcohol due to genetic faults or through learned behaviour, or is it a self fulfilling prophecy?

Best answer:

Answer by Erulastiel
While he may have a stronger tendency to drink too much than most people, his genes are not in control of his drinking habits. With a bit of will power, he can avoid alcoholism. He may have to go to the extent of not drinking at all, but it can be done.

Question by Traleese Young: is healthy for a person in recovery from drugs be a volunteer at a program?
programs, volunteer work

Best answer:

Answer by JayD
First. I would think that the term “Recovery” should be just that . . recovery
If you use the term recovering as if you are “always recovering” regardless of how long ago it was, which a lot of people do now . .
well . . here goes . . .
If you are truly in a “revocery” process and putting your life back together . . it may be in one’s best interest to concentrate on themselves, . . as misery and bad habits love company. You probably know as well as anyone how that works.

However . . if one has been clean and made strides in living a normal life (but considers himself “recovering” because “we are always recovering” then it is entirely plausible that they could help others. You know . . nobody knows the condition better than the ones who have lived it for a few years. It’s very common for volunteers to be ex-addicts . . . but I wouldn’t think it would be “fresh” ex-addicts.

Unless of course you are still in the program and under watch and guidance yourself. It gives a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Something addicts don’t have . . so in those regards, it is a good thing, positive, and win-win.

Hope that wasn’t too nebulus
Best wishes in your journey
